What transfers between the two languages
- /p/ does not exist in Arabic, so “pig” may sound like “big.”
- Arabic has no verb “to be” in the present, so “he happy” is expected.
- Definite articles work differently, so “the” may be over- or under-used.
Difference or disorder?
Many Arabic-speaking children also use a home dialect alongside Modern Standard Arabic. Both count as their language, and neither is deficient.
About code-switching
Switching between dialect, Modern Standard Arabic, and English is sophisticated linguistic skill.
How we assess it fairly
We ask which dialect the family speaks and assess against that variety, not a textbook standard.
